This public art work was created in support of the 33 Chilean miners who were trapped underground for more than two months. As a symbol of hope, a 33-story-high cross of light was lit every night during the final and most critical stage of the miners’ rescue.

More than 330 fluorescent tubes connected to timers turned on at night, and the illuminated cross, which could be seen from miles away, covered the buildings entire façade. The cross of light symbolized an above-ground funeral cross for those buried below who were struggling to survive, as well as a beacon of life and faith, evoking the South American tradition of lighting a candle to pray for loved ones.
