The Awareness of Uncertainty was originally installed in Sebastian Errazuriz’s studio, hanging precariously without the use of safety rigging in order to maintain a remote but real possibility that the piano could one day fall over the artist.
In 2019, Eric Shiner invited Sebastian to present at the Armory Art Show as a sculptural documentation; a reenactment of the actual piece that the artist lived under between 2008 and 2013 in his first New York studio.
“It was almost a durational piece that was slowly adding pressure and tension to my work process. Forcing a daily sense of urgency and awareness into any artwork created during that period. The last two years I sincerely wished I hadn't decided to commit. Every morning I would open the studio door hoping to find that the piano had crashed to the floor overnight, so I wouldn't have to work under it that day.”
The improvised functional installation could easily be mistaken for a one liner, nevertheless any perceived joke, stopped being funny the moment that choosing to work under it implied a literal extra daily risk of death. All of this in pursuit of maintaining a heightened state of awareness while creating work.
The Awareness of Uncertainty is of particular significance in today's rapidly changing art world, in which artists are searching for new ways to push themselves in order to create work that can connect in an era of over saturation of visual information.
With the installation strategically placed over the Champagne lounge, one cannot help but notice the irony of seeing people inadvertently toast in celebration, unfazed by the looming uncertainty of the current political and social scenario.
