Enamel and latex on wood and glass

H:48 x W:36 x D:4 in.

For the past 5 years artist and designer Sebastian ErraZuriz has had an ongoing playful banter about the limits of art and design with the organizers of Design Miami.

The international design fair is the world's most exclusive venue for collectible design. Occurring alongside the Art Basel fairs; Design Miami's focus on design does not allow art to be exhibited in the fair. This strict regulation has on two occasions censored Sebastian's works which walk the grey areas between art and design.

The Painting Cabinets where designed to escape the fair's censorship while addressing the futility of trying to separate both disciplines from cross pollinating. With phrases such as "The End Is Near" or "Buy for 10.000 sell for 1.000.000" the artist refers to both the inevitable collision of art and design and the fragility of the collectible market built around it. Sebastian ErraZuriz "With these paintings if the Art bubble pops and the market crashes at least you are left with a practical hidden shelf to store the little valuables you might have left".
